What is spinal stenosis?

Spinal Stenosis is a condition that is exemplified by a narrowing of the spinal canal.  Most commonly, this can result from a disk protrusion into the canal or as a result of degenerative changes, among other causes.  Degenerative spinal stenosis has a gradual onset and is typically seen in the older population. When it occurs in the lumbar spine, it is characterized by pain when standing and walking that quickly resolves with sitting or lying down (See Neurogenic Claudication). When is develops in the cervical spine (neck), it may present with neck and arm pain, especially when looking up.  It may or may not have associated neurological signs and symptoms, and thus a thorough assessment is essential.
