What is Facet Joint Syndrome?

The facet joint is formed by the articulation of the vertebral bones of the spine. They are two facets joints at each level, one on each side, and are likened to the size of a knuckle. Facets are true joints in that they are made up a joint space, synovial lining and fluid. Their orientation and function vary depending on which portion of the spine they are located, but ranges from rotation to stability and weight bearing. Thus, cervical facets experience a different force than the thoracic or lumbar joints, and this is reflected in the variations in wear and tear patterns that may lead to pain.

what are the symptoms of facet joint syndrome?

Facet joint pain or “syndrome” suggests pain originating from the facet joint, and thus is a local pain that may have some radiation around the region in question. The facet joint should be considered as part of the workup for spine pain. One extreme form of “Facet Joint Syndrome” is cervical whiplash, a common neck injury in rear end motor vehicle collisions.
