Facet Joint Injection Image.jpeg

Facet joint injections (refer to earlier discussion on Facet Joint Pain) are a common procedure that target the joint of the spine, in this case the lumbar section. Also done under fluoroscopy (like ESI’s) the needle is directed into the joint, and once placement is confirmed with a small amount of contrast, a combination of steroids and anesthetic is injected into the joint. This procedure is very specific and targeted to the suspected painful joint. Thus, it is both therapeutic and diagnostic. In other words, if greater than 50% pain relief is obtained, it is likely that the facet joint is indeed the source of pain. This information can then be used to guide further treatment such as physical therapy and additional interventions, or may emphasize the need for address weight, posture and work environment, for example.
